Many people who do not have land suitable for farming lease 1 manzana (roughly 1.7 acre) plots during the rainy season for around $100 per season. The majority of these subsistence farmers do not have the money up front for the land and pay a high price in both interest rates and collateral in order to receive loans from the bank. We believe there is a better way to help these people! We provide classes, taught by certified agronomists, teaching basic farming & sustainability, nutrition, a little business and economics in order to maximise the full potential of these seasonal family farms. After the classes are finished we partner with the graduates providing a no interest, personal, micro-loan to be paid off incrementally as the season progresses and the terms of the class are fulfilled.
We believe in teaching the amazing benefits of sustainable farming. Growing proven crops, composting excess & waist into organic fertilizer, raising the correct animals for your environment and managing your resources and your land are all very important skills to learn in order to optimize your farming and invest in it's success for the future. We don't want to invest in people and programs that waist money and resources only to have land become unusable in the future. We want to see farmers raising farms that will be usable for their children and grandchildren!
The "Layer" model consists of between 50-200 chickens, depending on space and availability of land, and has the potential of turning a profit of over $2000 a year, tripling the annual salary of the average Nicaraguan family.
The average turnaround for Broiler chickens in Nicaragua is 6 weeks. We have a proven business plan that can turn a profit after the third cycle when starting from scratch (including building costs, feed and new chicks).
Hydroponic farming is relatively easy and requires very little land. When partnering with neighbors and friends it can not only be a way of feeding families and communities, it can be a lot of fun too! We have worked with proven hydroponic co-operatives in the past and have a wonderful business model to follow into profitability!
